These types of flights are also referred to as “deadhead” and “ferry” flights.

Empty legs can be booked and flown with passengers on-board and these flights provide a cost-effective alternative for those with flexible travel plans who would like to experience private jet travel for a fraction of the price.

How Empty Legs Work

When private jets are chartered on-way flights, they generally have to make a return trip back to their home base for servicing or to prepare to fly the next chartered flight. These returning flights or repositioning flights are usually flown without passengers and therefore named “empty legs.”

Empty leg flights are already scheduled to fly regardless with or without passengers which is why operators charge substantially less for these empty leg flights, making them an attractive for those with flexible travel arrangements to experience private jet travel at economical rates.

Flexibility is key with empty leg flights since there is limited flexibility in terms of the departure times and destination. Passengers have to plan their travel around the schedule of the empty leg. Any changes in the schedule are usually not possible without incurring additional costs.

Empty legs can be flow at discounts up to 75% off of the regular charter price, depending on the route and demand, some empty leg routes have more demand than others.

Flying on an empty leg flight still means you are flying privately and the passengers receive the same level of experience and comforts that private jets offer, albeit at a discount.
